Vueltabajo is a historical-cultural region. It is the land of the best tobacco in the world. There the industrious vegueros cultivate the precious leaf, unique for its quality, combustibility, flavor and aroma, essential raw material for cigars.

Pinar del Río, capital of Vueltabajo, celebrated in 2017 the 150th anniversary of the granting of the title of City to the city, granted by the Queen of Spain Isabel II in 1867, thanks to the contributions that tobacco brought to the court and universal fame of the Habanos.

What has Vueltabajo special to be considered the land of the best tobacco in the world? Among its potential highlights the combination of four essential elements:

  • The soil of the southern plain fertilized and irrigated, with the essences of the majestic Guaniguanico mountain range, from Río Hondo to the Cuyaguateje.
  • The climate that achieves harmonious stability in Las Vegas, with its oscillating and combined temperatures.
  • The varieties of quality and resistance, where the aromatic leaf comes from, with the application of science, from the Experimental Station of San Juan y Martínez.
  • The man, endowed with tradition and experience, able to feel the plants and leaves grow as Don Alejandro Robaina affirmed, in the vegas covered with tulle, which provide the layers touched by the prodigious hands of women, in a meticulous manufacturing process. intense.

As part of the program of the Habano Festival, there is a tour of the Vueltabajo plantations, which is like a trip to the origins of the Habano. It is very interesting for those attending the event to see, firsthand, how is the process of growing the sheets for the layer, the capote and the gut, which are used in the preparation of future cigars.

During these visits the participants also get to know some producers, discover certain secrets in the experimental station and enjoy a unique landscape of tobacco plantations, the Valley of Viñales, the Mural of Prehistory and enjoy a tasty lunch with Creole food.
